Shadow Play

Ghada Anam

A shadow pierces my heart

After I swallowed a throat

To help me shed light on who I am.

I bear the light on my darkness.

It pours like deprivation of what I want

I retrieve rejection letters.

I exchange my tears by saying:

Yes

I consent

I apologize

..

Stand in front of me.

Embrace me like a camphor tree.

Mix with my colors,

Fly with my wings.

This spirit is the beginning…

Another shadow storms the scene.

My monologue grows restless, and my fields are covered with wheat.

It asks about my condition.

Echoes in my memory, of milk and rain!

White and cyan

Tears

Misspelling

A letter pronounced improperly

It asks about my face,

Like a chessboard,

I have two faces.

..

Stand in front of me

Stroke my face with wheat grass.

Mix with my colors,

Fly with my wings.

..

One last shadow

Applauded from afar

Despite its frustration with the performance

Nightmares about its eyes

A dancing child hiding in his chest

Winding alleys of love

It has a mask.

It runs away from me.

The eye catches sight of it when day meets night

It pauses between them.

Before night.

Stand in front of me,

Introduce me to what flowers are.

Mix with my colors,

Fly with my wings,

Put a phrase that

Brings down the curtain.
